Breast Surgery

Breast augmentation. It seems like a simple goal at first thought: to fill out that bathing suit better or feel more confident in your own skin.  While this is true, if our breast augmentation patients are any indication, there’s a good chance you want bigger breasts that you love.

Choosing an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. It’s also important to be able to communicate easily with the surgeon and the office staff. Make sure they are attentive to detail. You’re “hiring” them to do a very important “job” for you and you want the best.

You may consider bringing a friend to the consultation. Sometimes it’s better to have an extra set of eyes and ears. Maybe the friend will remember something you didn’t. Plus, bringing a friend along can make the process fun and less stressful.

It may be helpful to take some photos with you or download some images of breast augmentations, too. “I like this look. I don’t like that. These are too saggy. They look fake.” It may sound trivial, but many of us are visual learners. The point is, show the surgeon what you do and do not like. This enables you to better discuss realistic goals and expectations for your body with your surgeon.

What size do I want to be? Great question. And this sort of goes back to the picture/image thing. Do you want your breasts to be proportionate to your body? Do you want to have larger breasts? Do you just want to be able to fill out a bra? Think about your everyday life. Do you run or play tennis? Larger breasts may be more difficult if you are super active. Just a thought. Go with a size that works for you. Keep in mind cup size and implant size vary widely among individuals: 300cc may be a D cup on someone that weighs 110 pounds but may be a B cup on someone that weighs 200 pounds. What will you feel most comfortable with at work, when socializing, or just hanging around your house? Your surgeon will likely have implant sizers for you to try. Although sizers are not an exact science, you will have an idea of how implants will look.

Another option for a breast augmentation is fat transfer. Some people are nervous about getting breast implants because they fear complications of having foreign material in their body. In the fat transfer technique, fat from your own body is used to enhance the breasts. Your surgeon harvests fat from one or multiple areas of your body with liposuction and relocates it to your breasts. Fat transfer augmentation is not a replacement for implants. However, it is a suitable alternative in specific instances where patients are looking for a small increase in size or to slightly enhance the fullness of their breasts with a more natural option.
